In 1963, John Coltrane recorded his only album with a singer: John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, still a landmark of vocal jazz. For Coltrane’s centennial in September 2026, Branford Marsalis revisited this classic, this time with a female voice. “When I woke up the first thing I said was ‘Dianne Reeves,’” the saxophonist recalls. The result is Dedicated to You on Blue Note, which pairs the six standards of the original with instrumental pieces from Coltrane’s songbook. Marsalis, a three-time Grammy winner and NEA Jazz Master, has led his quartet since 1986, today with Joey Calderazzo on piano, Eric Revis on bass and Justin Faulkner on drums – one of the most closely attuned bands in jazz. Their previous album reimagined Keith Jarrett’s classic Belonging. Dianne Reeves, a five-time Grammy winner and also an NEA Jazz Master, won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album three times in a row, a first in any vocal category. Stuttgart knows her well: in 2025 she received the German Jazz Trophy here and sang at the Altes Schloss. At the Jazz Open, she now returns there alongside Marsalis: Branford Marsalis & Dianne Reeves Celebrate John Coltrane.
